Football League Branding

Home Kit & Away Variation

Advancements in textile technology led to increasingly complex football shirt designs, which were not always easy on the eyes!

The home shirt crest commemorated the club's centenary, recognising both Headington and Oxford United, and it was exclusively featured on the yellow shirts.

Midway through November, the match shirts were replaced with a new style that included simpler, thinner numbers, featuring a small Matchwinner motif at the base.

Away Kit

These adventurous, multi-coloured designs were truly pushing the boundaries of what was acceptable to the FA, with fans referring to them as the "deck-chair" shirts.

Initially, Matchwinner produced shirts featuring a yellow club crest in the same style as the goalkeeper jersey. However, these shirts had screen-printed numbers that were difficult to distinguish against the vibrant fabric. By the time this kit was needed for first-team use, it had been upgraded to include much clearer numbers sewn onto a navy blue panel, along with white club crests.

Similar shirts to these were seen throughout the domestic leagues, with Wigan Athletic, Preston North End and St Mirren all having this same design template, but in different colour combinations.
